Kaleva, Kerava 2017

This painting is related to the “Rakkaudesta Vapauteen” exhibition which takes place later this year at nearby Sinkka, Kerava Art Museum. Few, selected artists who participate in the exhibition, were invited to paint this underpass. This part of the tunnel was painted by JR, Round, me and Mion.

Kaleva is the name of this region of Kerava. The name is borrowed most likely from The Kalevala, a 19th-century work of epic traditional finnish poetry. It was requested that if we could somehow depict that in our painting. So JR and Mion decided to do their own version of a classic finnish painting, The Defense of the Sampo, by Akseli Gallen-Kallela.
